Who We Are/What We Are About

Audrey Galex has always been a good listener: She listened when her paternal grandmother Rose Galex (aka “Sugie”) regaled her with the saga of her journey to America. She listened when her father told her about his early years working in the family mattress business. She listened when her mother spoke about growing up in Memphis, Newburgh, N.Y. and then Miami Beach.

As a writer and news features reporter for Cable News Network, in both Jerusalem and Atlanta, she listened when interviewees recounted their stories, from science to politics and beyond.

And as a storyteller, herself, she listens with an ear for detail, and then translates those stories through voice and movement into performance pieces for the stage.

It takes a good listener to build bridges across generations and between cultures. And that’s why Audrey started Roots & Wings Life Stories, to share, acknowledge, honor and celebrate our stories.

Audrey co-founded Roots & Wings Life Stories in 1992 with CNN colleague Sara Ghitis. Audrey is now sole owner of Roots & Wings, and focuses on sharing stories on stage, in print, through workshops and on recorded media.

As a professional storyteller, she shares tales from the rich heritage she inherited from her Jewish ancestors. Audrey currently serves as the Axler L’Dor v’Dor Storyteller in Residence for Atlanta’s Center for Jewish Education and Experiences.

As a student of the world, she reaches out to cultures beyond her own to enrich her storytelling repertoire. She believes storytelling can and does transform individuals and communities, lending its power to enhance lives and promote peace and reconciliation. To that end, Audrey is the organizer of Atlanta’s annual “Peace & Winter’s Light” storytelling event celebrating the winter holidays. She also coordinated the 2005 “Song & Story Tsunami” to support CARE’s tsunami disaster relief efforts.

As a personal historian/video biographer and freelance broadcast producer she helps individuals, families and other groups preserve their stories and histories. She has produced video programs for dozens of families, as well as for organizations ranging from The Genesis Shelter, a homeless shelter in Atlanta for newborns and their families, to CO-AGE, the Coalition of Advocates for Georgia’s Elderly. Audrey is also the co-producer and narrator of the “Roots & Wings” series on aging and creativity broadcast on Atlanta’s public radio station in the spring 2003.

Audrey is also the facilitator of on-going reminiscence and storytelling sessions for older adult programs in Atlanta’s Jewish community. She is also a certified “Well Being Ambassador” workshop facilitator, a program created by the Atlanta-based Center for Positive Aging. Audrey’s also a regular columnist for the Atlanta Jewish Times.

Audrey holds a BA from American University in international relations, with an emphasis on Middle Eastern studies. She also holds an MSJ from Northwestern University in broadcast journalism.

She is a member of the Oral History Association and a founding member of the Association of Personal Historians. She is also a member of the Southern Order of Storytellers and the National Storytelling Network.

Audrey lives in a living laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband, three children, one dog and two cats.

And she’s still a good listener.
