Tapestry: An Arab-Jewish Storytelling Dialogue Project

In their program entitled “Tapestry: An Arab-Jewish Storytelling Dialogue,” B.J. Abraham asks, “Is it possible to overcome our fears and reach out to each other in peace? Is it possible to overcome our differences?” Audrey Galex answers, “Yes, it is, but it takes listening with an open mind, and being willing to ‘walk a mile in someone else’s moccasins.’ ”

The “Tapestry” project brings together two Atlanta-based storytellers -- one Lebanese, one Jewish – who offer an alternative way to stop the war raging between their two peoples.

Abraham, a founding member of the Southern Order of Storytellers, and Audrey Galex, of Roots & Wings Life Stories, came together in the spring of 2001 to share Arab and Jewish folklore, as well as proverbs, personal stories, song and poetry as a plea for peace in the Middle East.

Abraham and Galex, “The Tapestry Tellers,” have performed “Tapestry” in a variety of
settings, from retirement communities to Atlanta schools and churches. They have also presented a showcase performance of “Tapestry” at the 2002 National Storytelling Conference in Denver and to a gathering of seminary students during the 2005 Middle East Travel Seminars visit to Petra, Jordan.

According to Atlanta-based storyteller Connie Dodge, “In their obvious affection and care for one another, B.J. and Audrey are modeling exactly what it takes to create peace in the world, one relationship at a time.”

COMMENTS ABOUT “TAPESTRY” PRESENTATION

In their show, “Tapestry,” B.J. Abraham and Audrey Galex tell an Asian tale in which a hummingbird makes ready to catch the falling sky with its tiny upturned claws. When the bird’s efforts are scorned by an elephant, she says: “I can’t do it by myself, but each of us must do our part and this is what I can do.” With this program of personal and folk stories, exploring their friendship as well as their respective Lebanese and Jewish ancestries, the tellers are building one of the struts of the bridge of reconciliation between these two peoples. I, for one, was moved and empowered by their efforts.”
Milbre Burch, Internationally Renowned Storyteller

"Hats off to you for a moving, interesting, delightful evening."
Zel Hester, Storyteller

I so admire what you both are creating here. In their new program Tapestry, B.J. Abraham and Audrey Galex are about the work of creating peace. The dialogue, stories, poetry and music they share are moving and provocative. The most stunning aspect of this work, however, is the relationship between these two women, which is so apparent as they move through this program. In their obvious affection and care for one another, B.J. and Audrey are modeling exactly what it takes to create peace in the world, one relationship at a time. They speak of Tapestry as a "work in progress.” Isn't that what all important relationships are as well?
Connie Dodge, Storyteller

It is true what Connie said about your work together and the way you model peace through your relationship and through storytelling. Courage you have---and we need more people like both of you who are willing to show publicly what it means to build such kind of relations. Peace
Ilise Cohen, Director, American Friends Service Committee

That was well stated by Connie I believe, and so true regarding the respect and caring between Audrey and you that was quite obvious before, during and after the presentation.

What a moving and emotional story you and Audrey have put together! A real powerful evening. You have crafted something of such worth and value that I hope you continue to present it for many venues. Thank you for the moving story.

Tapestry was great. I was right to make you the focus of the evening.

B. J. & Audrey, Finally today I got to hear, see and feel your presentation "Tapestry.” I loved it. You have a very powerful and moving product. If I had to describe it in one word, that word would be "genuine.” Your audience's responses and questions speaks tons. Thank you for bringing it to us. I predict that this jewel will go far and grow and grow as it continues its journey.
Leslie Buie, Storyteller

Hi, B.J., I thought your performance on Sunday was outstanding.
Ellen Handlin

I wanted you to know how much my husband and I enjoyed your and Audrey's Tapestry program. It was just full of surprises, humor and depth. I especially liked the use of the black and white shawls. It was one of the best visual things you did, and the symbolism was great. I also enjoyed the Q and A following. I was so pleased with the participation of the audience, and with your revealing comments.
Jean Wynn

The energy between you two is so incredible!

Neil Norton, CBH Congregation

I just wanted to thank you again for sharing your Tapestry with us. I can't tell you how many times since Sunday morning that Emilia and I have drifted into thought and then said at the same time "Remember the part about..." It was fascinating, entertaining, thought provoking -- we couldn't have enjoyed it more.
