Winter's Light
4th Annual Winter’s Light “Many voices, one spirit” expresses the message of “Winter’s Light,” Atlanta’s annual interfaith storytelling and musical event held in December. In 2007, Winter’s Light will feature internationally-acclaimed folksinger John McCutcheon. "John is one of the greatest songwriters, musicians and song leaders. And just incidentally, he is dedicated to organizing and moving this world in a better direction" - Pete Seger The event will be held in the auditorium of Druid Hills High School on Saturday, December 16, 2007 at 7p. General admission tickets are $20 and will be available at the door. Proceeds from the event will go to charity. Individuals wishing to join the Southern Order of Storytellers before December 1, 2007 will receive a discount on Winter’s Light tickets. From Previous Years Winter's Light
In year’s past, this family-friendly program has featured the children’s chorus from the International Community School, as well as Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Bahai, Hindu, Native American and African-American storytellers, and performers of other faiths and ethnic communities.
Performers have included veteran Atlanta storytellers Rob Cleveland, Barry Stewart Mann, Connie Dodge, Chetter Galloway, Janice Butt, Opal Muhammad, Warren Jacobs and Tersi Bendiburg, along with new and emerging voices. Singer/teachers Elise Witt and Gayanne Geurin Weiss have also led group chants and singing in a variety of languages. Their stories and songs focus on common themes of celebration, light and peace The event has been cosponsored by Central Congregational United Church of Christ, Congregation Bet Haverim, the Islamic Speakers Bureau-Atlanta, The Baha'is of North DeKalb County and the Kuumba Storytellers of Geogia, as well as the Southern Order of Storytellers and the Organization of DeKalb Educators. “It is my hope that this storytelling event will inspire others to reach across the divide of religion and find the common human spirit that unites us all in our shared destiny,” said Audrey Galex, the Atlanta storyteller who is coordinating “Winter’s Light. “And I am pleased that this event has become be a springboard for on-going interfaith storytelling programs in our community.” Sunday, December 16, 2007 at 7 PM
