This week, The Campaign for Wool and its patron, HRH the Prince of Wales, are celebrating its 8th annual Wool Week in the UK. Wool Week celebrates the beauty and functionality of wool by hosting various events which educate, inspire and promote the benefits of wool.

While we are not in the UK ourselves this week, we thought we'd share some education and inspiration from our own southern corner of the world about where our merino wool comes from and what makes it so special.

Wool fit for a king

Merino sheep is known as a regal breed, once gifted between kings. While you won't find any of our merino sheep grazing on castle grounds, you will find them in their happy place - the gorgeous mountains of New Zealand - breathing in the crisp, fresh air and freely roaming among the scenic snow-capped mountains.

Sure, it might sound like they are a bit spoilt, and they are (they live in paradise, after all), but this is exactly the reason why they are known to produce some of the softest, whitest and purest merino in the world.

The secret is in the softness

While all wool is definitely special and well-loved around the world, merino wool has an x-factor that makes it just a bit more special. Why is that, you may ask.

Merino wool is ultra-fine - the wool produced in New Zealand by our mountain-loving sheep is made from fibres that are about 1/10th the thickness of human hair, yet extremely porous and hypo-allergenic.

This ultra-fine texture also means that merino doesn’t itch or scratch your baby's sensitive skin.

What that means for you is that your little monster will stay comfortable longer no matter what the weather is like. This means less complaining and general grizzling by your little beast. Why? Well, merino is naturally breathable allowing heat and moisture to flow and with all of its micro-pores your little one’s temperature stays the same longer leaving them feeling drier and more comfortable.

Besides coming from spoilt sheep that breathe the fresh mountain air and being ultra-soft and comfy, our merino also has a number of other benefits. You can read more about those here.
